The phrase " on your bike " could have been coined for the Peak District. The area is particularly well- served with miles of quiet country lanes and bridleways.
Several former railway lines have been converted to safe, traffic- free routes especially suitable for children, and there are many, strategically placed cycle hire centres.
If the " rough stuff" is more to your liking, there`s an extensive network of bridleways ( usually waymarked with blue arrows), some of which follow ancient packhorse routes over challenging moorland countryside into remote and little frequented parts of the Peak, just right for mountain biking.
Tissington Trail - follows the route of the old Ashbourne/Buxton railway, from Mapleton Lane, just north of Ashbourne to Parsley Hay a distance of 13 miles. There are car parks and pinic sites at the old stations and the trail can be used for walking , cycling and pony trekking.

The Manifold Track - a favourite for cyclists following the old route of the disused Leek and Manifold Light Railway from Waterhouses to Hulme End, a distance of over 8 miles. For all but 2 miles the track is carefree. Being surfaced and fairly level throughout its length, it is also ideal for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.
Carsington Reservoir - provides an 8 mile circular track around the reservoir. Part of the trial is on the public road through Hopton village . The remainder of the trail is through the nature reserves and wildlife park.
